Privacy Policy

Your privacy is critically important to us, so at COMPASS Science Communication, “COMPASS” we have a few fundamental principles.

  • We won’t send you too many emails. We’ll be in touch when we have important news to share or opportunities to attend events and support science communication—about 1-2 emails per month at most.

  • We don’t ask you for personal information unless we truly need it.

  • We don’t share your personal information with third parties except to comply with the law, protect our rights, or complete a transaction initiated by you.

  • We don’t store personal information on our servers unless required for the ongoing operation of one of our services.

  • You can unsubscribe at any time to any COMPASS email list, service, or recurring donation.

If you find content on the COMPASS website you believe violates our Privacy Policy, please contact us immediately.

Donor Privacy Policy

We will not sell, share or trade our donors’ names or personal information with any other entity, nor send mailings to our donors on behalf of other organizations. This policy applies to all information received by COMPASS via any electronic, written, or oral communications. To the extent any donations are processed through a third-party service provider, our donors’ information will only be used for purposes necessary to process the donation.

Website Data and Aggregated Statistics

Like most website operators, COMPASS collects non-personally identifying information of the sort that web browsers and servers typically make available, such as the browser type, language preference, referring site, and the date and time of each visitor request. COMPASS may also collect statistics about the behavior of visitors to its website or the types of individuals who use our services. For instance, COMPASS may monitor the most popular pages and articles on the compassscicomm.org site using Google Analytics, or use attendance data to target marketing.

COMPASS’s purpose in collecting non-personally identifying information is to better understand how COMPASS’s visitors use its website. From time to time, COMPASS may release non-personally identifying information in the aggregate, e.g., by publishing a report on trends in the usage of its website.

Personally Identifying Information

Certain visitors to COMPASS’s websites choose to interact with COMPASS in ways that require COMPASS to gather personally identifying information. The amount and type of information that COMPASS gathers depends on the nature of the interaction. For example, we ask visitors who sign up for our newsletter mailing list to provide an email address.

Those who engage with COMPASS – by purchasing services, receiving services without payment, making donations, and attending events – are asked to provide additional information, including the personal and financial information required to process those transactions. In each case, COMPASS collects such information only insofar as is necessary or appropriate to fulfill the purpose of the visitor’s interaction with COMPASS. COMPASS does not publicly disclose personally-identifying information beyond what is necessary and reasonable to fulfill the purpose of the visitor’s interaction. The voluntary disclosure of personal information to COMPASS by the user constitutes consent to the collection and disclosure of the information by COMPASS for the purposes for which the user disclosed the information to COMPASS. Visitors can always refuse to supply personally-identifying information, with the caveat that it may prevent them from engaging in certain COMPASS-related activities.

Privacy Policy Changes

Although most changes are likely to be minor, COMPASS may change its Privacy Policy from time to time, and at COMPASS’s sole discretion. COMPASS encourages visitors to our website and users of our services to frequently check this page for any changes to its Privacy Policy. Your continued use of this site after any change in this Privacy Policy will constitute your acceptance of such change.

Protection of Information

COMPASS discloses potentially personally identifying and personally identifying information only to those contractors and partner organizations that need to know that information in order to process it on COMPASS’s behalf or to provide services.

Employees, contractors and partner organizations may be located outside of your home country; by using COMPASS’s services, you consent to the transfer of such information to them. COMPASS will not rent or sell personally identifying information to anyone.

Other than to its employees, contractors and partner organizations, as described above, COMPASS discloses personally identifying information only in response to a subpoena, court order or other governmental request, or when COMPASS believes in good faith that disclosure is reasonably necessary to protect the property or rights of COMPASS, third parties or the public at large.

COMPASS takes all measures reasonably necessary to protect against the unauthorized access, use, alteration or destruction of personally identifying information.

Email Communication

COMPASS maintains multiple email lists for sending occasional activity updates, outreach, and donation requests to individuals that subscribe to our blog, use our services, or have otherwise interacted with COMPASS. Users may remove themselves from this mailing list by following the link provided in every email. We will not sell, distribute or lease your personal information to third parties unless we have your permission or are required by law.

If you supplied your email address on our website, received one of our services, or expressed interest in receiving one of our services, COMPASS may occasionally send you an email to promote an event, solicit your feedback, solicit donations, or just keep you up to date with what’s going on with COMPASS and our services.
