Recent events have shown the need for greater awareness of the work done by professionals who have dedicated their careers to civil service. \nThis free 90-minute workshop is designed to provide an opportunity for you to build your skills around strategically communicating the importance and relevance of your work for the audience(s) you most need to reach\, in ways that are nonpartisan\, clear\, and compelling. \nWe’ll share strategic communication principles\, discuss how to identify your key audiences and what matters most to them\, and practice using the Message Box\, our tool for gathering and refining your thoughts. The workshop is intended for current or recent U.S. civil servants at any scale (local\, state\, federal) and any focus area. We are most experienced in supporting people in science roles\, but our workshops can be helpful for anyone in a role where they need to communicate effectively and strategically about their work. \nPlease note: this workshop focuses on concepts and techniques individuals can use to help them share the importance of their work\, especially around scientific topics\, without partisanship. Yet we often start crafting our key messages without a clear idea of who we are communicating with\, what matters to them\, or how we want them to make change with us. This approach can make our messages fall flat and leave us feeling disconnected instead. \nTo make the most of our efforts\, it helps to take some time before putting messages to paper to clarify our purpose and current understanding of those we most need to reach. \nIn this 90-minute interactive event\, you will work through the process of building a strategic communication plan that centers your goals and audience(s) with step-by-step support from a COMPASS facilitator. You will articulate your reason for communicating\, identify your key audiences and their motivations\, and brainstorm where and how to reach them. \nWhen we lead with connection and mutual understanding\, we can pave the way for collective action that leads to equitable\, lasting change. \nPlease note this is not a workshop. All activities are independent. While we welcome and encourage questions and discussions\, you will not be expected to unmute or turn on your camera at any point.
