DESCRIPTION:Learn tools and strategies to help you effectively communicate your social science with diverse audiences.\n\n\n\nAs the interconnectedness of people and the environment becomes better recognized\, there is a growing need and opportunity for social scientists to engage with others about their work. Translating social science findings into clear\, concise\, and compelling messages without losing the depth of their explanatory power can feel challenging. But like any skill\, through training\, practice\, and feedback\, we can all become more strategic and effective social science communicators. Grounded in science communication research and practice\, this interactive virtual workshop will help you gain tools and skills to strategically communicate your work to diverse audiences. \nOver the course of three hours\, COMPASS trainers guide you through techniques and tools that help you prepare for strategic communication\, then support you as you apply what you’ve learned through facilitated group discussions and activities\, including practice sessions with other participants in breakout rooms. By the end of the workshop\, you will: \n\nGain a stronger understanding of the science behind science communication\n\n\nLearn how to use the Message Box\, COMPASS’s signature tool for breaking down complex topics into digestible\, effective messages\nDraft a COMPASS Message Box of your own\, on a topic of your choosing\nFeedback on your draft messages\n\nBy registering for this workshop\, you are agreeing to adhere to our code of conduct. Please also commit to actively participating for the benefit of yourself and the group\, including using a webcam during discussion and breakout room portions of the workshop. Due to the progression of materials presented and the paired exercises\, we cannot admit participants who are more than 15 minutes late. More information can be found in the FAQ section below. \n\n\nWho could benefit from this workshop?\nWe’ve designed this workshop to meet the communication needs of those who use social science methods and approaches to understand social phenomena\, but it is open to anyone who would like to build their strategic communication skills. Given our mission at COMPASS\, the majority of participants who have participated in our workshops in the past have been professional researchers\, scientists\, and science users whose work focuses on the environment\, and many of our examples draw from this work. However\, this workshop is suitable for anyone seeking to make their communication efforts more strategic and relevant for their audience. \n\n\nTechnology\nThe workshop will be held on the video conferencing platform Zoom. If you are unfamiliar with the platform\, this one-minute video explains how to join a meeting. You will need a webcam\, microphone\, and stable internet connection. SUMMARY:Strategic Presentations
DESCRIPTION:Every presentation is an opportunity. Join us to learn how you can make your presentations more effective and strategic.\n\n\n\nPresentations are a common form of communication in the professional world. Presentations and public speaking are also some of the most anxiety-provoking activities that professionals are regularly required to do. Many of us\, consciously or unconsciously\, are comparing ourselves to viral presentations that we’ve seen online. But those highly polished and deeply engaging presentations didn’t just happen magically because the presenter was born talented. They’re the result of thoughtful preparation and practice—and if we put in the time and effort\, we can make sure that our presentations are engaging and effective too. \nWhether you’re presenting internally to leadership or externally to colleagues within and beyond your field\, it’s important to make the most of your presentation opportunities by being strategic and intentional. Who are you presenting to? What is your goal for the presentation? What are the parameters for your presentation? How will you handle potential problems before or during your presentation? This workshop goes beyond common ‘dos’ and ‘don’ts’ of presenting\, to share practical applications of adult learning theory and provide a template for preparing strategic presentations. \nBy registering for this workshop\, you are agreeing to adhere to our code of conduct. \n\n\nWho could benefit from this workshop?\nAnyone who seeks to build their skills in presentation and building shared understanding with their audience. \n\n\nTechnology\nThe workshop will be held on the video conferencing platform Zoom. If you are unfamiliar with the platform\, this one-minute video explains how to join a meeting. You will need a webcam\, microphone\, and stable internet connection. Recommended upload/download speed is 5Mbps/5Mbps. Test your internet speed here by clicking “run speed test.” This workshop will also incorporate the browser-based whiteboard program called MURAL.

SUMMARY:Before the Message
DESCRIPTION:At its best\, communication serves to unite people from various backgrounds and perspectives around a shared vision. Yet we often start crafting our key messages without a clear idea of who we are communicating with\, what matters to them\, or how we want them to make change with us. This approach can make our messages fall flat and leave us feeling disconnected instead. \nTo make the most of our efforts\, it helps to take some time before putting messages to paper to clarify our purpose and current understanding of those we most need to reach. \nIn this 90-minute interactive event\, you will work through the process of building a strategic communication plan that centers your goals and audience(s) with step-by-step support from a COMPASS facilitator. You will articulate your reason for communicating\, identify your key audiences and their motivations\, and brainstorm where and how to reach them. \nWhen we lead with connection and mutual understanding\, we can pave the way for collective action that leads to equitable\, lasting change. \nPlease note this is not a workshop. All activities are independent. While we welcome and encourage questions and discussions\, you will not be expected to unmute or turn on your camera at any point. Due to the progression of materials presented\, we cannot admit participants who are more than 15 minutes late. \nThis session will be recorded (absent any technical difficulties) and will be emailed to registered participants and accessible on our website a few days after the event. \n\n\nWho could benefit from this workshop?\nGiven our mission at COMPASS\, the majority of participants who have participated in our events have been professional researchers\, scientists\, and science users whose work focuses on the environment\, and many of our examples draw from this work. However\, this event is open to anyone who would like to build a more intentional communication plan. \nYou do not need to have worked with COMPASS previously in order to attend this event\, but we think it pairs nicely with our Introduction to Strategic Science Communication where participants learn about message crafting using the Message Box. Please see our event page to check out our Introduction to Strategic Science Communication workshops. Test your internet speed here by clicking “run speed test.”

SUMMARY:Navigating Difficult Conversations
DESCRIPTION:Learn to communicate science across conflicting viewpoints in this 3-hour virtual workshop.\n\n\n\nMany science topics are increasingly difficult to discuss due to rising polarization. Opinions on climate change\, vaccine use\, and more may be aligned with identities and values that are hard to work through\, particularly when your own values appear to be different from\, or even conflict with\, those of your audience. \nDuring this 3-hour virtual workshop\, you’ll learn about the connection between partisanship and views on science\, the types of audiences to focus your efforts on\, and steps to making progress in a difficult conversation. You’ll have the opportunity to practice listening to your audience to identify values\, and to develop messages with those values in mind. \nThe workshop will be a combination of facilitated group discussion\, content presentation\, and activities in breakout rooms. By registering for this workshop\, you are committing to active participation in the workshop\, for the benefit of both yourself and the group. Please also plan to use a webcam whenever possible during discussion and breakout room portions of the workshop. Due to the progression of materials presented and the paired exercises\, we cannot admit participants who are more than 15 minutes late. More information can be found in the FAQ page on our website. \n\n\nWho could benefit from this workshop?\nThis workshop is open to anyone who uses science to understand the world and would like to discover tips for communicating science topics across ideological differences.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Risk Communication
DESCRIPTION:Prepare to communicate risk effectively and compassionately.\n\n\n\nEvery day\, we all make decisions that require us to consider risk\, but it can be challenging to communicate risk to others in compassionate\, meaningful ways. We know more than ever about how risk information is processed in the brain\, and applying those insights to our risk communication will help our audiences better understand risk and make more informed decisions about their health\, safety\, and the environment. \nDo you need to communicate risk effectively and strategically to others from a scientific perspective? If your work has any implications for decision-making\, we believe the answer is yes. Whether it’s letting people know about a red tide beach closure or translating technical information for community planning\, effective risk communication can improve comprehension and decision making while building relationships in the process. \nIn this 3-hour virtual workshop\, you’ll \n\ngain a deeper understanding of the science behind risk communication;\ndraft a plan for communicating risk around a topic that’s important for you;\npractice revising a key risk message to be more meaningful\, compassionate\, and actionable for your particular audience; and\nreceive feedback on your message from peers and trainers.\n\nThe workshop will include a combination of content presentation\, group activities\, group discussion\, and paired activities in breakout rooms. By registering for this workshop\, you are committing to active participation in the workshop\, for the benefit of both yourself and the group. Please also plan to use a webcam whenever possible during discussion and breakout room portions of the workshop.
