COMPASS Seattle Workshop FAQs

FAQs for Seattle Workshop

Q. Who could benefit from this workshop?

A. This workshop is open to anyone who would like to learn, practice, and/or hone their science communication skills. We will focus on the Message Box tool, individual work time, and small group exercises. Participants will distill their message so that they can effectively share it with the audiences that they want to reach, so having something in mind that you want to practice communicating is highly encouraged.

Because of COMPASS' mission, our materials focus on environmental science examples, and the majority of participants who have attended our workshops in the past are professional researchers or scientists whose work focuses on the environment. However, this workshop is open to all science fields and the program and content is relevant at any career stage and for any subject area.

Whether you’re a science student just starting to think through what your message could be, a science professional looking to get some practice sharing your message with a new audience, or somewhere in between, this is a great opportunity to build your skills and meet others who share your interest in communicating science effectively.

Q. Are there scholarships available?

A. Scholarship applications are now closed; applicants will be notified by February 28th.

Q. What is your cancellation policy?

A. Registration fees are refundable, minus a $50 processing charge, until March 27th. After March 27th, we are unable to offer refunds. Refunds will be processed within 2-3 business days. Contact us at trainings@compassscicomm.org if you need a refund.

Q. Where can I stay if I'm traveling from outside of Seattle?

A. There are several lodging options near ATLAS Workbase.

Q. How do I get to ATLAS Workbase?

A. ATLAS Workbase is located on the corner of 5th Ave and Mercer St, on the second floor above QFC (address: 500 Mercer St, Seattle, WA 98109).

Driving Directions: I5 South or I5 North: Take exit 167 for Mercer St toward Seattle Center. Turn right on 5th Avenue N and Mercer Street.

Public transit: The No. 3 & 4 buses have stops about 2 blocks from ATLAS. The Seattle Monorail runs every 10 minutes from the Westlake Station to the base of the Space Needle; from there it’s about a 6 minute walk to ATLAS.

If you are taking the Link Light Rail, the most efficient and reliable way to reach ATLAS is to get off at Westlake Station and go upstairs to transfer to the Monorail, and then walk to ATLAS from the Space Needle at Seattle Center.

Q. Where can I park?

A. ATLAS offers complimentary bike storage, located in the garage below the building. Parking options and directions to ATLAS are outlined in this download.

Q. How do I find the room at ATLAS where the workshop will be held?

A. Enter the building from the corner of Mercer and 5th Ave N (entrance is shared with QFC). Go up the stairs and through the glass double doors. The ATLAS Concierge desk or COMPASS staff will assist you in navigating to the room.

Q. Will there be other dates or opportunities to join a COMPASS workshop?

A. Yes, our aim is to offer more workshops in the Seattle area, based on need and interest! Sign up here to be added to our mailing list to learn of new cities and dates as they become available.

Q. Do you offer discounts?

A. Yes! Sign up early and get $75 off the cost of regular registration. Early bird offer is open until March 8th.

Q. Do you provide certificates of completion? I need one in order to get reimbursed by my organization.

A. Yes, we do! Please email trainings@compassscicomm.org to receive a certificate of completion.

Q. What does it mean to be waitlisted?

A. We create a waitlist for workshops that are already full so we can offer spots if and when they become available. The cap for our waitlist is 10 people. If there is a cancellation and a spot becomes available, we will open up registration for the first person on the waitlist and then work our way down the list if other spots become available. We will contact you directly to let you know if a spot has opened for you.

Because of high demand, it’s very unlikely that we can accommodate every waitlisted person for any given workshop. We offer spots to waitlisted persons in the order they were placed on the waitlist. In order to be fair to other waitlisted participants, we cannot move you up the list or accommodate you if you show up to our training space on the day of the workshop—even if there are last minute cancellations. If you have been waitlisted and want to know what number you are on the list, please email trainings@compassscicomm.org.
