We’re thrilled to announce that Emily Patrolia, Founder and CEO of ESP Advisors, has been elected to serve as the next Chair of the Board of Directors.

Emily founded ESP Advisors in 2020 to elevate ocean and environmental priorities, drawing on her extensive background across federal policymaking, strategic advocacy, and environmental science. Through her leadership at ESP Advisors, she has spent the last six years driving revenue and growth, managing a high-performing team, and steering the firm with strategic direction through complex, fast-changing policy waters. Her experience spans Congress, including serving on the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, as well as roles in the private and nonprofit sectors focused on ocean health, maritime security, technology, and sustainability.

As COMPASS navigates a period of exciting change and opportunity, Emily brings a deep understanding of the science-policy landscape and a commitment to helping organizations adapt and thrive. Her leadership will support COMPASS in embracing strategic nimbleness, ensuring the organization can meet the moment as the world faces increasingly complex scientific, environmental, and societal challenges.

“The challenges ahead demand more than knowledge—they demand connection. They require us to speak clearly, listen generously, and build bridges even when we disagree. COMPASS prepares people to do just that, equipping leaders to meet this moment of rapid scientific and societal change with courage and clarity.”

We also want to express our deepest gratitude to Dr. Jessica Hellmann, who has served as Board Chair for the past five years. Jessica’s steady leadership, commitment to the COMPASS mission, and dedication to supporting scientists as they engage with society have strengthened the organization and expanded its impact.

Emily shared, “Jessica has been an exceptional Chair whose leadership, warmth, and vision have guided COMPASS through pivotal years. I’m honored to follow in her footsteps and build on the legacy she has created.”

We look forward to the road ahead as Emily steps into this role, helping guide the organization’s mission to empower scientists to effectively engage in the world and shape a more connected, informed, and resilient future.
