Connecting science with the decisions shaping climate solutions
Marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) processes offer promising solutions to climate change. As research advances, decisions about field trials, governance, investment, and implementation must take into consideration communities and be informed by science. Bridging the gap between emerging science and these important decisions requires researchers who can engage clearly and thoughtfully with policymakers, journalists, communities, and other decision-makers.
COMPASS is helping build the communication infrastructure the mCDR field needs so scientific evidence can inform responsible, equitable, and evidence-based climate decisions.
Since 2022, COMPASS has worked with researchers across the mCDR community to strengthen communication skills, ground mCDR science in responsible engagement, and build a growing network of scientists committed to connecting research with society. Our approach recognizes that meaningful change happens at multiple levels: by supporting individual researchers, strengthening collaboration within the scientific community, and creating opportunities for researchers to engage in public dialogue and decision-making.
mCDR Communication Leaders Cohort
From 2025-26, COMPASS brought together researchers from across the mCDR field to learn from each other and from experts in community engagement, Indigenous rights, media, and policy. Together, they explored how responsible and effective science communication and engagement can both strengthen their research and foster more informed, equitable decision making around mCDR.
Workshops for mCDR Professionals
To expand our reach beyond the cohort, COMPASS is offering three free virtual workshops designed specifically for the mCDR community: Developing Your Message, Communicating Risk, and Engaging with the Media. Through interactive activities, peer feedback, and guided practice, participants will build practical skills for communicating complex science with a range of audiences.
Looking Ahead: Strengthening mCDR Communication
Over the past four years, we’ve demonstrated what’s possible when mCDR researchers receive sustained communication support. Now we’re expanding our work by building a network of communication leaders and creating more opportunities for researchers to engage directly with audiences who shape policy and public understanding.
